American humorist David Sedaris is currently on tour promoting his latest (and seventh) book, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary, and fans have been lining up to see his storytelling in person. After reading excerpts to a standing room-only crowd at New York’s famed Apollo Theater in early January, Sedaris gushed about his current career high to CBS News. “The fact that I could make a career out of reading-I never allowed myself to dream that would happen,” Sedaris said, still pinching himself despite nine million in book sales that prove his dream has become a reality.

Although Sedaris’ devoted readers have been waiting for hours to rub elbows with the author of the best-selling collections of personal essays like Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim and When You Are Engulfed in Flames, he doesn’t mind all of the attention. “I love getting attention, just like a child loves it, and it’s never worn off. So when people say, oh the book signings go on. Why would I shoo away someone who’s giving me attention? What part of standing in line for 10 hours to say how much they love you is bad to you?” Sedaris told CBS News.

The second of six children (you know his sister Amy from Strangers with Candy and she recently released her own hilarious book, Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People), Sedaris was born in New York and grew up in Raleigh, N.C. but now splits his time between France and England. Despite his ex-pat status, fans can get David Sedaris tickets to hear him read his subversive and side-splitting stores in cities like Glenside, Pa.; Davenport, Iowa; Birmingham, Ala.; Houston, Texas; San Diego, Calif.; San Francisco, Calif. and more through early May.

If you do get a chance to catch Sedaris on his latest book tour, you may want to bring some cash with you-as the humorist has been known to put out a tip jar! “A couple of books ago, I put a tip jar on my signing table and I made over $4,000 on my tour. The problem was then I started hating people who didn’t tip me. I didn’t say anything to them, but I would just sit there thinking, ‘You cheap son of a bitch. I just signed four books and you can’t even give me a dollar?’” Sedaris told The Washington Post before his tour in support of Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary kicked off.

Released in October by Little, Brown and Company, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary is a collection of animal-themed stories. Among the book’s gems are “The Toad, the Turtle, and the Duck,” in which three animal strangers commiserate about animal bureaucracy while waiting in a complaint line, and “Hello Kitty,” which sees a cynical cat being forced to attend AA meetings. The latest book from the winner of the Thurbor Prize for American Humor has already garnered praise from the media sources like the Boston Globe.
