When was Romeo and Juliet written? Considered as the most famous work penned by William Shakespeare, it is a tragedy that depicts a love story among lovers whose love is forbidden by the parents. Many people love this play and they are also interested to know the answer to the question when it was written.
1. The first answer to the question when was Romeo and Juliet written is between the years 1591 to 1595. Many scholars have agreed that these were the years that Shakespeare most likely wrote this play. Most scholars have based it on one of the settings in one of the Acts where a nurse speaks about a disastrous earthquake. The quake mentioned actually happened eleven years before the tragedy was written. It was the earthquake that happened in England in the sixteenth century.
2. The second answer to the question can be arrived at by knowing the writing style the tragedy was written in. The style it was written is very much alike to the other plays Shakespeare wrote in 1590.
3. The third answer to the question can be based on the manuscript of the first known play date of Romeo and Juliet. The year of the first known Romeo and Juliet play was 1597. The manuscript was called Quarto. However it was later proved to be a false copy. It was printed without Shakespeare allowing it but this fact proves that the work was made by Shakespeare before 1597.
4. The fourth answer to the question can be based on the original first edition that got published in 1599. The first edition is longer than the false one printed in 1597. The printing was made by Cuthbert Burby. The lines are clearer than the false publication. It was published again after that year. This has been called Q2 which is one of the solid bases for telling when the tragedy was actually written.
In 1623 a Folio edition was printed. Q2 was the basis of most of its content. Then more Folios were printed after that year. In the eighteenth century annotated Romeo and Juliet books appeared. The first person who annotated it was a man named Nicholas Rowe. The Romeo and Juliet books we can buy today were formed from the annotated publications.
