When many start to search for freelance online writing jobs, they may start with sources like: major job boards (eg, Monster, CareerBuilder); or popular classified ad sites (eg, Craigslist, Backpage); or popular freelance writing sites (eg, Helium, eHow, etc.).

While all of these are excellent sources, they usually don’t offer the best rates. If you’re looking for high-paying, online writing jobs, you need to do the following.

Market for Them Yourself: I’ve been a freelance writer since 1993. And I can tell you first-hand that most of the clients I’ve gotten I did not find on job boards, freelance writing or classified ad sites.

I get most of my work by marketing directly to companies via email. The reason this works so well is that when you contact a company directly, you’re not competing with 101 others who saw the same freelance online writing jobs ad you did and decided to apply.

Hence, your credentials have a chance of standing out. And, not only this, even if a company has no need for your services right now, two or three months down the road, you may get a call or email saying something to the effect of:

“We received your information back in November. Now that the holidays are over, we’re re-doing our website and need some SEO content. Can you get back to us and let us know how much you would charge to write 10 articles on home foreclosures initially? If all goes well, we’d like weekly content.”

I can’t tell you how many times this has happened to me — and how many times other freelance writers have written in to me telling me the same thing happened to them.

Set Your Own Freelance Writing Rates: One thing about marketing to companies directly is that you get to set the rate. If you post them on your website and/or send them along with your initial query, when clients contact you it’s presumably because they can afford you. Hence, it’s just a matter of nailing down the job specifics.

Choose High-Paying Niches: Since 2007, almost all of my work has been concentrated in the SEO sector. In case you don’t know, SEO is the acronym for search engine optimization.

It’s a type of writing that helps websites get found online. SEO content drives site traffic, which drives sales. And, clients are willing to pay a pretty penny for it. You can pretty quickly build up to earning $100–$250+/day. All it takes is consistent marketing, to the right niche, charging competitive freelance online writing jobs rates.
