Freelance writers have often had the misleading stigma that a writer may spend five minutes prior to a deadline punching a few words into a keyboard before submitting a piece of work.

In actual fact, freelance writing requires effort. A professional writer must research and plot their work before writing even begins. Whether it be writing an article, creating an eBook or just simply writing a blog, a freelance writer must gather their thoughts before putting pen to paper. Failing to follow this correct planning and preparation simply results in wasted time and poor quality work. This quite often means an unhappy customer or more importantly a customer that will not come back for repeat service. A well-known freelance writer once told me that “an hour in planning will save many hours of wasted effort”.

A writer must carefully understand their clients’ needs and expectations. Often, a simple questionnaire sheet submitted to the client before research and planning even commences, will save hours of rework and more importantly greatly increase customer satisfaction. A freelance writer must understand what topics are to be discussed, how much detail is required, what the intended audience will be and what level of understanding the reader should already have. I give you this example; a client would like an article written about gardening, is the audience aimed at home gardeners or is the piece aimed at botanists’? The content and the type of writing may vary hugely depending on who the intended audience is.

Once the needs of the client are understood, only then may the freelance writer commence research on the topic. The more thorough the research, the more precise and appealing the freelance writers’ work will be. Writing about hot topics within that field will engage readers into their piece. Rehashing material that has already been published is what I call “freelance writer suicide”. Readers and clients only ever want to read fresh content. Offering a fresh perspective creates additional interest. Understanding the target market or audience will create a more successful piece of writing. Do not put a time limit on how long the “research” stage should last. Just be thorough. A writer should read all publications on the intended subject, visit blogs, opinion articles and recent news pieces. A freelance writer should then carefully implement their research into the planning stage of their writing piece.
