How To Cultivate The Craft Of Fiction Writing
Taking the first step is sometimes the hardest for some. Because you can imagine what it will be like when you become successful, you can take advantage of this opportunity. You’ll find out just how easy that is when you visit http://www.georgehutton.net/zapotec
You know the feeling; you are sitting there, like you are now, looking at your computer screen, like you are now. Only instead of reading these words in front of you, you are trying to come up with your own. Attempting to string together that unique combination of words and sentences and paragraphs that will capture and move peoples emotions in such a way that they truly understand, on a personal level, what it is you are trying to express. So when people read your words they will have a “Wow…” moment of comprehension and clarity of insight.
But the words don’t come. Try as you might, you can’t think of one sentence. If you lived fifty years ago, your wastepaper basket would be overflowing with crumpled up pieces of paper. Luckily, all you need to do is backspace to erase the words you’ve written and deemed unworthy, leaving you with that blank screen and that blinking cursor. Mocking you. Laughing at you.
It doesn’t have to be this way. There is a way to avoid this. What people don’t realize is that writing is a skill, and not a gift. Those that give up before they are successful don’t realize this. They have this mistaken belief that writers have some special creative gift that others don’t. When they try and fail, they give up.
But not you. You know the truth. Writing is not a gift, and special present to those worthy enough to receive. Writing is a skill, just like golf or basketball or playing the piano. And how to you get better at those things? That’s right, practice.
And how do you get better at writing? Write every day. About anything. Just like you can go to the driving range to practice your seven iron, or play the scales on the piano, or practice your lay-up, you can practice writing.
Write about the drive you took this morning. Describe it in detail. Write about the conversation you had with your neighbor last night. Think of these as practice shots on the chipping green. And just like any other skill, the more you practice, the easier it will get. Writers block will become something that only those “other” people get. Have you ever heard of somebody getting swingers block in golf? Or shooters block in basketball? Of course not. Writing is the same. When you write every day, your skills will explode and your creative pieces will take on a whole new dimension. Unless you are going to give your finished piece to an editor for publication, you don’t even have to worry about grammar or sentence structure or verb-noun agreement (whatever that means). Just write and write and write and you will naturally improve to the point where people will pay money to read what you write. And that is a good feeling, isn’t it?
